What is My Continence Care?

Everyone deserves to be cared for in a way that keeps them safe, healthy and supported as individuals. When continence is managed well it can assist in the reduction of infections, falls, injury, functional decline and can in turn, improve quality of life.

In response to the findings of the Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety, the Continence Foundation of Australia commissioned the National Ageing Research Institute (NARI) to develop and test a best practice model for continence care in residential aged care settings. This formed the foundation of what is now My Continence Care.

My Continence Care guides a compassionate approach to continence care that goes beyond toileting and continence aids.

My Continence Care is a suite of products designed for Residential Aged Care that includes workforce training (eLearning) module, toolbox talks (known as 'continence convos’) and additional resources to enhance the workforce, building on existing knowledge and skills.

Benefits of My Continence Care?

The benefits of choosing My Continence Care are shared by the aged care workforce as well as those they care for.

My Continence Care empowers the workforce to see the person at the centre of every interaction, with evidence based continence care that reduces risks associated with incontinence including infections, incontinence associated dermatitis, falls, decline in functional ability and emotional/social impacts related to incontinence.

My Continence Care provides the workforce with skill uplift by providing in-depth education including person centred themes:

  • Building connections
  • Dignified continence care
  • Empathy
  • Understanding trauma
  • Human rights
  • Shared decision making
  • Proactive care

Workers are able to build on existing continence knowledge and skills so that the care and support delivered is dignified, respectful and individualised.

My Continence Care improves understanding of the elements of person-centred care to provide holistic, quality continence support in line with the new aged care standards.

It provides training tools that support the translation of learning into practice.

The program's Continence Consumer Guide has been developed to inform older people living in residential aged care about quality continence care and support.

My Continence Care improves person centred continence care.
